I Studs for Partition Walls

Metal studs are the go-to method for building stud walls for many construction professionals. Galvanised steel stud and track walls offer good value, excellent strength and improved resilience against moisture compared to traditional timber studs.

I studs form the vertical part of a metal framing system. Combined with horizontal floor and ceiling tracks, they create the metal grid onto which insulation, plasterboard and more can be placed.

Choosing an I Stud or C Stud

For the vertical section of a metal stud wall, you would traditionally use a C stud. However, thanks to their shape, I studs offer more durability and load bearing potential compared to C studs without requiring additional width.

An I stud is a good option if you are building a partition wall requiring more strength. This could be a higher partition wall than usual, one requiring more impact resistance, or one needing more board fixing strength. I studs can be paired with extra deep tracks to further increase a partition’s strength.
