Tapcon’s blue masonry screws are very popular for light-duty fastening into brick or concrete materials. They’re relatively quick and easy to install and are removable, which makes them a good choice for any temporary fixings. Because they don’t expand like other anchors, they can also be used close together or close to edges.

Can You Drill Tapcon Screws Straight into Masonry?

Do not drill tapcon screws directly into masonry. Tapcon screws should only be inserted through a pre-drilled hole.

Use a hammer drill to create a hole in the masonry material and make sure the hole is cleaned before carefully inserting the tapcon screw to ensure a secure hold.

Using the Correct Drill Bit with Tapcon Hex Head Screws

When pre-drilling a hole for Tapcon screws, the hole should be slightly thinner in diameter than the screw to allow its threads to dig into the masonry. For example, if the tapcon screw is 6mm in diameter, use a 5mm drill bit to pre-drill the hole.

The tapcon screw can be installed using a drill, but a low torque level is recommended. Too much pressure can cause head shearing or the tapcon screw to spin out, damaging the hole and weakening the hold. The last few turns should be done by hand to ensure a tight hold without damaging the screw.
