Why Women in Construction Week Matters

In 2022, our research into the construction industry revealed that only 4.2% of the construction workforce are women. But between 2016 and 2021 there was a 138.3% increase in the number of women enrolling in construction trade apprenticeships in the UK, with that number only continuing to grow.

Taylor O'Brien, a female Construction Skills student, told us: “There are not many women in this field, so it would be great to help make a change."

The construction industry has historically been male-dominated, but women continue to break barriers and make significant strides in leadership, engineering, project management, skilled trades, and beyond.

Women In Construction Week serves as a platform to honour hard work, foster networking opportunities, and inspire the next generation of women to pursue careers in construction.

As we break into 2025 women make up around 15% of the UK construction workforce, with approximately 340,000 women employed across various roles. There are still significant disparities in representation across different sectors of the industry:

  • 1% of women work in manual trades.
  • 7% of executive roles in construction.

Despite these statistics, the industry is changing... With a growing skills shortage and an estimated need for 250,000 additional workers by 2027, women have the potential to play a pivotal role in closing this gap and driving the industry forward.

Why Should Woman Pursue Careers in Construction?

We spoke to a range of women in construction to get their insights on working in the industry, and learn why more women should get involved!

Many women we spoke to expressed how learning trade skills can help set women up for self-employment and owning their own businesses. Labourer Lou Parkinson told Fastbuild Supplies, "I was already working as a builder’s labourer for another construction company; however, I wanted a business of my own and to work in an environment where my brain carried as much weight as my muscles."

Lou was also pursuing an electrician qualification, which she said “will also give me the knowledge and skills to have my own business and be set up for life.”

Other women highlighted the physical benefits and satisfaction gained from their work. Carpenter and joiner Bracken Vanstone told us: “I feel fit and strong from the manual labour and have a great sense of satisfaction knowing that my work is dotted in and around the countryside and will be for many years."

Women In Construction Week 2025: Together We Rise

This year’s theme for Women In Construction week is ‘Together We Rise’, which highlights the importance of unity, mentorship, and advocacy in creating a more inclusive and diverse workforce. By supporting one another, sharing knowledge, and fostering opportunities for growth, we can ensure that women not only enter the construction industry but thrive in.
